A Japan-based sex educator in a sex magazine said in a statement this week that she has been using Viagra since she was a teenager. “I was in the sex industry for a long time, but it was really embarrassing to go out and be with friends,” she wrote in the article.
She was also a teacher, she said.
“I thought it would be a lot better if I didn’t have to spend so much time around people, because they didn’t care if I was in the sex industry, but I did,” she said. “I was so depressed that I thought I was going to die.”
She said she had to go out for a couple hours to see if the pills would work and had to go to her doctor and ask about other things. She said they were going to have sex on a regular basis, but she had never done so. “I had to go to the gym every day, to try to get the stamina back, and I couldn’t get it up,” she said.
Viagra, which was sold under the brand name Levitra, has been widely prescribed by doctors, said the BBC’s Simon Evans, in a statement. “It’s widely believed that the use of Viagra or its generic equivalent may be harmful.”
A spokeswoman for Pfizer said the company was “reviewing the safety profile of Viagra and its generic equivalent” and that the drug had been found to be unsafe.
She added that she did not recommend that men stop using the medication.
She said that while Viagra was widely available, it was important to be aware of potential side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea and a feeling of heat that lasted for days. “There is no question that Viagra is associated with sexual dysfunction,” she said. “However, it should not be used by anyone who is taking any form of nitrate medication, such as nitroglycerin.”
The statement said that while Viagra was available in packs of four and up in the UK, it was only available in packs of eight and 10.
Pfizer said that although men who take it regularly may be at risk of sexual dysfunction, it was not the first drug to be approved for use in women.
“We are working with local healthcare authorities and the sexual health community to ensure there are no potentially harmful side effects and that we are aware of all available data,” the statement said. “We are making further changes to the guidelines and will update this on a regular basis.”
Dr Paul Shearer, a sex educator, said he believed that the use of Viagra was safe and that the safety of the drug had not been questioned.
“In fact, the drug has been associated with the occurrence of sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction,” he said.
He said the company had been looking for ways to ensure that the product was safe.
“We have also seen cases where there were no signs of adverse events, and so we are looking at using a safe alternative, which is not an erectile dysfunction product.”
He said that while there had been a few instances of side effects, “there was no reason to believe that they had been reported to the product’s manufacturer”.
He said the product had been tested on a number of healthy volunteers and that in a small number of cases, men had reported having problems with erection.
He said that the drug should be taken regularly for four or eight weeks.
He said that while it was difficult to determine if Viagra affected any men at large, he felt that the drug was safe.
“I am still working on my plan to quit taking the drug, so I am not sure what it could do to me,” he said.
The drug has been prescribed to many men who suffer from erectile dysfunction, including many who were taking nitrates for angina.
The drug has been available to doctors and patients in many countries, including the US, and it was also shown to be safe, he said.
